How It's Different

Why carrier liability isn't the same as transit insurance.

When goods are lost or damaged in transit, most shippers assume their carrier will cover it. In practice, carriers limit their liability, often to a fraction of what the goods are actually worth, and only pay if they can be proven at fault. That's a high bar most claimants don't clear.

FreightInsure is a separate insurance policy held by you. It pays based on the declared value of your goods, not on whether the carrier admits fault.

Carrier Liability

Your carrier's terms limit what they owe you.

Payouts depend on what they decide, not what you lost.

Cover is capped, often well below your goods' value.

Claims take weeks, with no guaranteed outcome.

FAQs

Transit insurance questions, answered.

What is transit insurance?

Transit insurance is a policy that covers your goods against loss, damage, and theft while they are being transported. Unlike carrier liability — which is limited, fault-based, and held by the carrier — transit insurance is a policy you hold, covering the full declared value of your goods from pickup to delivery, subject to policy terms.

How much does transit insurance cost in Australia?

Your premium is calculated as a percentage of your goods' declared value. The exact rate depends on the type of goods and destination. You can get an instant quote by entering your shipment details — no broker, no phone call required.

Is there an excess on FreightInsure transit insurance?

No. FreightInsure has no excess. The full declared value of your goods is claimable from dollar one, subject to policy terms. Traditional marine insurance typically carries excesses of $1,000 or more, which means most everyday freight claims are never paid.

What's the difference between transit insurance and shipping insurance?

The terms are used interchangeably in Australia. Both refer to a policy that covers goods in transit against loss, damage, or theft. FreightInsure offers per-shipment cover — you buy a policy for each individual consignment, rather than taking out an annual policy.

Do I need to follow specific packaging requirements?

Yes. Correct packaging is a condition of cover. Read the FreightInsure packaging guidelines before shipping to make sure your goods are claimable under the policy.

How quickly are claims resolved?

The target is to resolve claims within 5 business days of receiving all required documentation. Claims are managed by FreightSafe, which has over 20 years of freight claims experience in Australia.

Is FreightInsure available for international shipments?

FreightInsure covers domestic Australian shipments and international shipments originating from Australia and NZ, up to AUD 50,000 for international cover. Eligibility is limited to Australian entities and residents. Cover cannot be purchased cross-border.

Who underwrites FreightInsure transit insurance?

FreightInsure policies are underwritten by Assetinsure Pty Ltd (AFSL 448403) and HDI Global Specialty SE (AFSL 458776). FreightInsure Pty Ltd (ABN 56 659 137 550; AFSL 549662) acts as agent on their behalf.

Can I buy transit insurance for regular shipments?

A single-shipment policy is purchased per consignment. If you ship regularly and want a more efficient arrangement, speak to our team about a business account.
